The Fern Scarf:  Little Piece of Aotearoa to Wear

The fern has always felt to me like one of the most beautiful ways to express the spirit of New Zealand. Its graceful shapes, gentle movement and connection with our native landscape inspired me to bring its beauty to life on silk.

When I paint a fern, I am not simply painting a plant. I am trying to capture a feeling — the peacefulness of the bush, the freshness of the New Zealand landscape and that special sense of connection with nature that I have come to love

A fern to wear.

A story to carry.

A little piece of Aotearoa to treasure

Inspired by the Beauty of Our Native Bush

New Zealand is home to many beautiful native ferns, from delicate forest ferns to magnificent tree ferns. Their shapes and textures are wonderfully artistic, and I love watching how the fronds unfold and move through the light.

The unfurling fern has also inspired the beautiful koru, a spiral form associated with new life, growth and renewal. These ideas became part of my inspiration as I developed the design for this scarf.

The silver fern, or ponga, is especially meaningful to New Zealanders and has become a familiar symbol of our country. Its distinctive silver underside and elegant shape make it instantly recognisable.

Painting a Feeling on Silk

I wanted this scarf to feel light, graceful and alive.

Painting on pure silk allows the colours to flow and blend in their own beautiful way. Sometimes the silk surprises me during the painting process, and I love that part of creating — allowing the colours and shapes to develop naturally rather than trying to make everything perfectly predictable.

For me, every scarf becomes part of my artistic journey. I begin with an idea, but the finished piece often becomes something more than I first imagined.

A Scarf to Remember New Zealand By

Whether you live in New Zealand or are visiting for the first time, I hope this scarf brings you a little closer to the beauty of Aotearoa.

Perhaps it will remind you of a walk through native bush, the soft light of the mountains, or simply the peaceful feeling of being surrounded by New Zealand's natural beauty.

And when you wear it somewhere far from here, I hope it brings back a happy memory of your journey.
