Discover the majestic Kererū
Delve into the fascinating world of New Zealand's native wood pigeon, the Kereru. Learn what makes this beautiful bird so special and how its unique charm inspires our handcrafted silk art.
A touch of magic in the skies
The Kererū, or New Zealand wood pigeon, is one of the largest fruit pigeons in the world. Its plump physique and iridescent feathers contribute to an unmistakable presence in our country's woodlands, making it a cherished symbol of New Zealand’s biodiversity.
An ecological keystone species
As New Zealand's only native pigeon, the Kereru holds a special place in our hearts and culture, playing a vital role in seed dispersal for native trees. We want visitors to feel a deep appreciation for its distinct beauty and ecological significance when they encounter our art. Kereru are beautiful and unique on this earth in so many ways; there is nothing else on this planet quite like the Kereru.
Since the extinction of the moa, the Kererū and Parea are now the only bird species big enough to swallow fruit larger than 12mm in diameter. They disperse seeds over long distances, playing a crucial ecological role in the survival of many of New Zealand’s native trees.
Cultural legacy: The beloved Kereru for us
There are many beautiful items inspired by the Kereru, but what makes my silk paintings featuring this magnificent bird stand out? I draw inspiration from its vibrant colors and its importance in Māori culture, often seen as a guardian of the forest. My art captures this unique essence, celebrating not just the iconic beauty of the Kereru, but also its unparalleled symbolic depth. Each piece is a tribute to the Kereru's singular place in New Zealand's natural heritage.
