Delve into the captivating world of New Zealand's critically endangered Tara iti, also known as the Fairy Tern. Learn what makes this tiny bird so special and how its unique charm inspires our handcrafted silk art.

The fragile and most endangered bird in Aotearoa

The Tara iti, or New Zealand Fairy Tern, is truly unique to Aotearoa, New Zealand, and is one of our most critically endangered birds.  As New Zealand's most vulnerable bird, the Tara iti holds a special place in our hearts and conservation efforts. With fewer than 40 adults and only 10 known breeding females remaining as of July 2025, its existence hangs by a thread.. We want visitors to feel a deep appreciation for its distinct beauty and ecological significance when they encounter our art.

A glimmer of hope: recovery efforts

When I paint featuring the Tara iti, we aim to share a message of resilience and hope. The Tara iti is a critically rare sight, breeding in only a few vulnerable locations in New Zealand, making its presence even more cherished. This incredible journey of adaptation and survival in the face of immense challenges is a core message embedded within our Tara iti-themed creations, reflecting the enduring spirit of New Zealand's native wildlife.

The Tara iti's legacy: A symbol of conservation in art

There are many beautiful items inspired by birds, but what makes our silk paintings and scarves featuring this magnificent bird stand out? We draw inspiration from the Tara iti's unique status as a critically endangered and precious bird in New Zealand, symbolising the urgent need for conservation. Gaby's art captures this unique essence, celebrating not just its delicate beauty, but also the unparalleled importance and symbolic depth of this revered bird. Each piece is a tribute to the Tara iti's singular place in New Zealand's natural heritage and its fight for survival.
