The Penwiper: A Little Flower with a Big Spirit

The Penwiper is one of those little treasures of New Zealand that can easily capture your heart. Its unusual beauty and ability to flourish high in the mountains inspired me to create this special collection of hand-painted silk scarves and wall art.

For me, the Penwiper represents something deeper than a beautiful flower. It speaks of grace, endurance, hope and a heartfelt affection — a feeling strong enough to move mountains.

Where Delicate Beauty Meets the Mountains

The Penwiper is a unique alpine plant found in the mountains of New Zealand's South Island. It grows in subalpine and high-alpine environments, where conditions can be cold and challenging.

Its delicate, creamy-white, fragrant flowers rise from beautiful rosettes of grey leaves, creating a wonderful contrast between softness and the rugged landscape around it.

New Zealand is home to an extraordinary diversity of alpine plants, including many species found nowhere else in the world. The Penwiper is one of these special plants that makes our mountain landscapes so fascinating.

I wanted my collection to celebrate this remarkable part of New Zealand's natural heritage and share a little of its beauty with visitors from around the world.

From a Curious Name to a Remarkable Flower

The name Penwiper has a charming connection with the past. Early settlers noticed that the plant's unusual form reminded them of the cloth used to wipe the nibs of ink pens.

I love these little details that connect nature with the people who first encountered it. They give this unusual flower an added sense of character and history.

What fascinates me most is how such a delicate-looking plant can thrive in the demanding environment of the high mountains. It is a beautiful reminder of nature's ability to adapt and flourish.

A Quiet Message of Hope

When I painted the Penwiper, I wanted to capture its gentle character and turn it into something with a personal meaning.

For me, it carries thoughts of hope, perseverance and the beauty of continuing to grow, even when the journey is not always easy.

The soft colours and elegant forms inspired me to create a design that feels peaceful and refined.

Whether worn as a silk scarf or displayed as wall art, I hope the Penwiper brings a feeling of tranquillity, connection and appreciation for the small wonders of nature.

It could also make a meaningful gift for someone special — a gentle way of saying:

“May you find peace, happiness and beauty along your journey.”

From Alpine Inspiration to Hand-Painted Silk

Painting the Penwiper on pure silk allows me to bring together nature, colour and imagination.
The Penwiper Scarf is a piece of wearable art — something to enjoy, treasure and carry with you.
The same inspiration can also become hand-painted silk wall art, bringing the delicate beauty of this alpine flower into your home.

For a visitor to New Zealand, I hope these pieces become more than a souvenir. I hope they become a lasting connection to Aotearoa — a memory of its extraordinary landscapes and the small natural treasures that make this country so special.

A little flower from the mountains.

A gentle reminder to treasure life's beautiful moments.

A piece of Aotearoa to carry or display.
